Author: Dan Ison | Category: Beginner Guides

Getting Started

Before you can even sit in the driver's seat for your first lesson, you need a provisional driving license. The process is straightforward but requires some specific documentation.

Requirements

To apply, you must:

  • Be at least 15 years and 9 months old.
  • Be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away.
  • Have legally lived in the UK for at least 185 days in total in the past 12 months.

The Application Process

The fastest and easiest way to apply is online via the official GOV.UK website. You will need:

  • An identity document (like a valid UK biometric passport).
  • Addresses where you've lived over the last 3 years.
  • Your National Insurance number (if you know it).

The current fee for an online application is £34. Your license should arrive within one week if you apply online.
